Semantic versioning and logging, version management
It is already very challenging to consistently give a current view of the organization. The more extended the organizational world of information, the more dynamic the continuous change and the shorter the validity of the status quo. It is therefore inevitable to have an ongoing and seamless documentation of all changes plus all relevant metadata.
MUM is designed to fully hold available the entire organizational history and to allow retrospective observations of certain information. Our motto is “Only if you know your past you will be able to actively shape your future”.
The challenges are in the details. Historical administration of complex organizational connections can particularly accumulate a tremendous amount of data that is to handle. A change does not necessarily contain relevant information and result in a new version of an object. So it is necessary to distinguish between technical versioning (a current version of an object has been changed) and semantic versioning (a RELEVANT change was made).
MUM supports semantic versioning by assessing each attribute and each property of an object in view of its semantic relevance. Consequently, the system can decide on its own if need be, if a change made shall be considered to be version-relevant or not. Regardless of that, any changes in the system can, of course, be logged and retraced.
Hence MUM gives you the unique opportunity to analyze documented data of reporting functions even over a longer period of observation and makes its relevant changes visible. In addition, you can have a look at the historical development of any object.
As version changes do not always coincide with the duration of semantic validity, MUM extensively supports you in subsequently processing versions that have already been concluded. This is done in view of chronological validity of data as well as according to its informational contents.
Example:
The system only logs changes of a person’s descriptive attributes (e.g. name, address etc.). In the event a person’s degree of employment changes from part-time to full-time, MUM automatically generates a new version of the personal object.
